After working with kids at Kanakuk for the past 30 years, I’ve had the unique opportunity to watch thousands of children grow in confidence —often in just a matter of days. What happens at Kanakuk is more than just fun and games. It’s formative. It’s impactful. And in many ways, it’s essential.

In a world where kids are increasingly scheduled, distracted, and pressured, a summer at Kanakuk offers something different. It creates space for growth, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, while preparing children for the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Here are 10 reasons why kids need a summer at Kamp.

Builds Confidence & Self Esteem

One of the most noticeable outcomes of a summer at Kanakuk is the way it builds confidence and self-esteem. At Kamp, kids are constantly stepping into new experiences. Whether it’s trying a new activity, meeting new people, or taking on a challenge they’ve never faced before, they are given opportunities to succeed outside of their comfort zones. Confidence doesn’t come simply from encouragement; it comes from accomplishment. When a child realizes, “I did that,” it changes how they see themselves. Kamp creates those moments over and over again.

Builds Independence / Identity

Along with confidence comes independence. Independence isn’t something that develops automatically; it has to be practiced. Kamp provides a safe and supportive environment where kids can begin to navigate life on their own. Being away from mom and dad, even for a short time, allows children to make decisions, solve problems, and learn from their experiences. Many parents are surprised to see how much more confident, capable, and mature their children are when they return home from Kanakuk. That growth doesn’t come from constant praise; it comes from successfully navigating new situations on their own.

Change of Pace

Another powerful aspect of Kamp is the change of pace it provides. Today’s kids live in a fast-moving, highly scheduled world filled with constant noise and digital distractions. Kamp slows things down. It removes the pressure of school, social expectations, and technology, and replaces it with a simpler rhythm of life. Kids write letters instead of sending texts. They share meals together. They rest. They play. In many ways, Kamp feels like stepping back in time, and that simplicity allows kids to reset in ways they didn’t even realize they needed.

New Friendships

Kamp also creates the kind of environment where deep, meaningful friendships can form. When kids live, play, and grow together, their relationships move beyond surface-level interactions. They share experiences, overcome challenges, and build trust. These shared moments create strong bonds that often last far beyond the Kamp experience. At the same time, living in close community teaches kids how to handle conflict, communicate effectively, and care for others; skills that are essential for life.

Role Models

One of the most influential elements of Kanakuk is the presence of strong, godly role models. Kanakuk staff have a unique opportunity to invest in the lives of campers in a meaningful and consistent way. They don’t just instruct, they model. Kampers get to see what patience, kindness, humility, and leadership look like in action. Since kids naturally learn by observation, these relationships often leave a lasting imprint. When children see faith lived out authentically, they are far more likely to embrace it themselves.

Kids Can Be Kids

Kamp gives kids something many of them are missing today: the freedom to simply be kids. In a culture increasingly driven by performance, comparison, and achievement, children often feel pressure to measure up. Kamp removes that pressure. There are no grades, no tests, and no constant evaluations. Without the influence of screens and structured expectations, kids rediscover creativity, imagination, and play. They laugh more. They explore more. They relax. They become themselves again.

Leadership / Character Development

Kanakuk is also a powerful setting for leadership and character development. Today’s generation learns best through experience, and Kamp provides countless opportunities for hands-on growth. Kids don’t just hear about leadership, they see it modeled and get to practice it themselves. They learn responsibility, teamwork, and what it means to be part of something bigger than themselves. These lessons aren’t abstract; they’re lived out daily.

Lifelong Memories

Beyond personal growth, a summer at Kamp creates memories that last a lifetime. There’s something about the Kamp environment that makes experiences more vivid and meaningful. The smell of coffee cake in the morning, the sound of laughter echoing through a cabin, the quiet of a star-filled night, and the stories shared around a campfire- these moments stay with kids long after they leave. They become part of who they are.

It’s Healthy

There are also clear physical benefits. Kamp gets kids moving. Instead of sitting indoors, they are running, swimming, climbing, and playing for hours each day. In a time when many kids spend more time on screens than outside, Kanakuk helps restore a healthy balance. It encourages activity, builds habits, and reminds kids of the joy of being outside.

It’s FUN!

And through all of this, one thing remains true: Kamp is incredibly fun. It’s filled with moments kids can’t experience anywhere else, flying down a zipline, swinging into a lake, racing down a waterslide, or exploring a creek. These aren’t just activities, they’re experiences that shape childhood in unforgettable ways.

A summer at Kanakuk is more than a seasonal activity. It’s an investment in a child’s growth, character, and future. It builds confidence, fosters independence, deepens relationships, and creates space for kids to grow into who they were created to be. After three decades of watching it firsthand, I can say with confidence: the impact of a summer at Kanakuk doesn’t just last a few weeks; it can last a lifetime.
