The Mother-Daughter Christmas Market Expedition was magical!!!  I had the opportunity to travel through Austria, Switzerland, and Germany, experiencing the magic of the Christmas markets alongside 40 other mothers, daughters, and grandmothers, and I am truly grateful!

Indeed, my highlight was sharing it with my mom and my two daughters.  There really is nothing like a girls’ trip, and getting to be on a girls’ trip with my three favorite girls was priceless.  My youngest daughter posted about the trip afterwards, and her caption was “my new favorite place with my two favorite people.”  If that doesn’t sum up the magic of the trip, then I don’t know what does!

The group we traveled with was a lot of fun!  We had girls ranging from age 11 to 77.  There were moms with one teenage daughter, moms with their post-college daughters, moms with their daughters who were also moms, and we had a few groups of three generations.  The love and the legacy of love on our tour were overwhelming, in the best way!

We didn’t sing Christmas carols on the bus like I thought we might (think back to those bus rides as a Kamper heading to trip, singing at the top of our lungs the whole way to the river), but by the end of the trip, we were all singing our favorite new Austrian kids’ yodeling song together.

We started in Vienna, with its beautiful palaces, clean streets, classical music, and show-stopping Christmas markets.  Our next stop was Salzburg, with nods to The Sound of Music, Mozart, and a quaint Christmas market featuring “kinder punch” and beautiful decorations.  We continued our journey to Munich, immersed in German Christmas traditions, history, and great food.  Next came the Alps, snow, and the fairy tale wonder of Oberammergau, before the stunning city of Innsbruck, flanked on all sides by snowy mountains.  The last stop was Lucerne, where we marveled at the lake and hopped onto a cable car for the most stunning views of God’s workmanship, as miles and miles of mountain peaks and high alpine meadows stretched before us.

There was shopping, unique restaurants, cultural shows we won’t soon forget, and new friendships forged.  Rachel Wolchin wrote, “If we were meant to stay in one place, we would have roots instead of feet,” and we put those feet to use on this trip!
